7 Cat Health Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Cats are masters at hiding illness. By the time symptoms are obvious, the condition may already be serious. Here are 7 warning signs that require immediate veterinary attention.

1. Hiding More Than Usual

A sudden increase in hiding behavior is one of the earliest signs of illness in cats. If your normally social cat suddenly disappears for hours or days, something is wrong.

2. Changes in Litter Box Habits

Going outside the box, straining to urinate, or urinating more frequently can indicate urinary tract issues, which can become life-threatening in male cats within 24-48 hours.

3. Decreased Appetite

Cats that stop eating for more than 24-48 hours are at risk of hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), a potentially fatal condition. Any loss of appetite lasting more than a day warrants a vet visit.

4. Excessive Thirst

Drinking significantly more than usual can be a sign of kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism, all common in older cats.

5. Weight Loss

Gradual weight loss is easy to miss. Weigh your cat monthly. A loss of more than 10 percent of body weight without trying is a serious concern.

6. Vocalization Changes

A cat that suddenly becomes more vocal or stops vocalizing entirely may be in pain or distress. Pay attention to changes in their normal communication patterns.

7. Breathing Changes

Open-mouth breathing, panting, or labored breathing in cats is always abnormal and requires immediate emergency care.

Cats cannot tell you they are sick. They show you through behavior changes. The more attuned you are to their normal patterns, the faster you can catch problems early.
