You set down your coffee mug. You turn around. Crash. Your cat is sitting on the counter, watching your mug shatter on the floor, completely unbothered. Why do they do this?
Reason 1: Attention-Seeking
Cats quickly learn that knocking things off tables gets an immediate reaction from you. Even negative attention (yelling) is still attention. If your cat does this when you are on the phone or working, they are saying: look at me.
Reason 2: Predatory Instinct
Cats are hardwired to bat at small objects. In the wild, this behavior tests whether something is alive. A pen on a table triggers the same instinct. The cat bats it to see if it moves.
Reason 3: Exploration
Cats explore the world with their paws. Pushing an object off a surface is a way of testing its properties: weight, texture, and movement.
Reason 4: Boredom
An under-stimulated cat will create their own entertainment. Knocking things off tables is thrilling: there is movement, sound, and a human reaction. It is basically a video game for cats.
How to Stop It
- Remove temptations: Keep breakables off counters and tables
- Provide alternatives: Puzzle toys, interactive play, and window perches redirect the behavior
- Ignore the behavior: If it is attention-seeking, do not react. Clean up without comment
- Double-sided tape: Apply to edges of surfaces where the cat likes to knock things. Cats hate the sticky feeling
- Increase play time: A tired cat is a well-behaved cat
Your cat is not being malicious. They are being a cat. Understanding why they do something is the first step to managing the behavior.
