Why Does My Pet Sleep So Much? Understanding Normal Sleep Patterns

If your cat or dog seems to sleep all day, you might wonder if something is wrong. The truth: pets sleep far more than humans, and for most of them, it is completely normal.

How Much Sleep Is Normal?

  • Adult dogs: 12-14 hours per day
  • Puppies: 18-20 hours per day
  • Senior dogs: 16-18 hours per day
  • Adult cats: 12-16 hours per day
  • Kittens: 18-22 hours per day
  • Senior cats: 16-20 hours per day

Why Pets Sleep More Than Humans

In the wild, predators expend enormous energy hunting. Even though domestic pets get fed without effort, their bodies still follow the same energy conservation patterns inherited from wild ancestors.

When Excessive Sleep Is a Problem

Contact your vet if your pet sudden sleep increase is accompanied by: loss of appetite, reluctance to move, changes in bathroom habits, or disorientation. These could signal thyroid issues, diabetes, heart problems, or depression.

Seasonal Changes

Pets, like humans, can be affected by seasonal changes. Many dogs and cats sleep more in winter when days are shorter and temperatures drop.

Quality of Sleep Matters

Pets experience REM sleep just like humans. You might notice them twitching, paddling their paws, or making soft sounds. This is normal dreaming. Do not wake them unless they seem distressed.

If your pet sleeps 14 hours a day but is energetic, playful, and eating well during their waking hours, they are perfectly healthy. They are just being an animal.
