Teaching your dog tricks is not just impressive. It strengthens your bond, provides mental stimulation, and builds confidence. Here are 10 tricks that most dogs can learn in a weekend.
1. Shake (Give Paw)
Hold a treat in your closed fist at your dogs nose level. When they paw at your hand, say shake and reward. Repeat until they offer their paw on command.
2. Roll Over
Start with your dog in a sit position. Hold a treat near their nose and slowly move it toward their shoulder, then over their back. Most dogs will follow the treat and roll over. Reward immediately.
3. Play Dead
From a down position, hold a treat near your dogs nose and move it slowly toward their side. When they flop over, say bang or play dead and reward.
4. Spin
Hold a treat near your dogs nose and move it in a circular motion. Your dog will follow the treat in a circle. Add the command spin once they are doing it reliably.
5. Touch (Nose Boop)
Hold your flat palm in front of your dog. When they touch it with their nose, mark the behavior with yes and reward. This is a useful trick for redirecting anxious dogs.
6. High Five
Similar to shake, but teach your dog to lift their paw higher and touch your raised hand.
7. Bow
Hold a treat near the ground in front of your dog and slowly pull it toward you. Your dog should lower their front end while keeping their rear up. Mark and reward the bow position.
8. Weave Through Legs
Stand with legs apart. Lure your dog through with a treat, stepping forward each time. Eventually they will weave through your legs as you walk.
9. Fetch Specific Toys by Name
Start with two toys. Name each one consistently. When your dog picks up the correct toy, reward enthusiastically. Gradually add more named toys.
10. Clean Up (Put Toys Away)
Teach your dog to pick up a toy and drop it in a basket. Start by rewarding any interaction with the basket, then shape the behavior into a full clean-up routine.
Keep sessions under 10 minutes, use high-value treats, and always end on a positive note. Your dog will amaze you with what they can learn.
