If your cat seems to sleep all day, you're not imagining things. Adult cats sleep an average of 12-16 hours per day — and kittens and senior cats can sleep up to 20 hours. But why do cats sleep so much, and is it normal?
Why Cats Sleep More Than Humans
Cats are crepuscular — meaning they're most active at dawn and dusk. Their sleep patterns are influenced by:
1. Evolution
In the wild, cats are ambush predators. They conserve energy for short bursts of hunting, then rest for long periods. Even though your cat gets fed from a bowl, that instinct remains.
2. Age
- Kittens: 20 hours — growing requires massive energy
- Adults: 12-16 hours
- Seniors: 18-20 hours — aging bodies need more rest
3. Weather
Cats sleep more on rainy or cold days. Just like humans, they prefer to stay cozy when the weather isn't ideal.
4. Boredom
Indoor cats with little stimulation may sleep out of boredom. If your cat sleeps all day but seems lethargic when awake, they may need more enrichment.
Cat Sleep Stages
Cats go through the same sleep stages as humans:
Stage 1: Drowsiness
Your cat is relaxed but still aware of their surroundings. Eyes may be half-closed, ears still twitching.
Stage 2: Light Sleep
Cats enter REM sleep quickly — you might see twitching whiskers, paw movements, or soft meows. They're dreaming!
Stage 3: Deep Sleep
This is when cats are hardest to wake. They may stretch out, lie on their back, or curl into a tight ball.
Common Cat Sleeping Positions
| Position | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Curled up in a ball | Conserving warmth, feeling protective |
| On their back, belly up | Feeling safe and comfortable — the ultimate trust position |
| Side sleeping | Deep, restful sleep — common in comfortable, secure environments |
| "Loaf" position | Light sleep, ready to spring into action |
| On your chest | Bonding and seeking warmth |
When to Be Concerned
While lots of sleep is normal, contact your vet if your cat:
- Suddenly starts sleeping much more than usual
- Has trouble settling or seems restless during sleep
- Is lethargic even when awake
- Shows other signs of illness (loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea)
