Dog training is full of pitfalls. Even well-meaning owners make mistakes that slow progress or create behavioral problems. Here are the 5 most common.
Mistake 1: Inconsistent Commands
Saying sit, sit down, sit please, and park it all mean the same thing to a dog, but using different phrases confuses them. Pick one word per command and stick with it.
Mistake 2: Repeating Commands
Sit, sit, sit, SIT teaches your dog that they do not need to listen the first time. Say the command once. If your dog does not respond, gently guide them into position and reward.
Mistake 3: Training When Frustrated
Dogs read your emotional state. If you are frustrated, your dog becomes anxious and learning stops. End the session, take a break, and try again when you are calm.
Mistake 4: Rewarding Too Late
The reward must come within 1-2 seconds of the desired behavior. If you wait too long, your dog associates the reward with whatever they were doing at the moment you delivered it (which might be sitting back down after a successful sit).
Mistake 5: Skipping Socialization
Training is not just commands. Socialization, exposing your dog to different people, animals, environments, and sounds during their critical development period (3-14 weeks), is the most important training you can do. A well-socialized dog is a confident, well-behaved dog.
The Fix
- Keep training sessions short (5-10 minutes) and positive
- Use high-value treats that your dog truly loves
- Train in a low-distraction environment first, then gradually add challenges
- Celebrate small wins. Progress is not always linear
The best trainers are not the strictest. They are the most patient, consistent, and joyful.
