If your dog seems to sleep all day, you're not imagining things. Adult dogs sleep an average of 12-14 hours per day — and puppies and senior dogs can sleep up to 18-20 hours. But why do dogs sleep so much, and is it normal?
Why Dogs Sleep More Than Humans
Dogs are polyphasic sleepers — meaning they sleep multiple times throughout a 24-hour period, unlike humans who typically sleep in one long stretch. Their sleep patterns are influenced by:
1. Evolution
In the wild, canines need to conserve energy for hunting. Even though your dog gets fed from a bowl, that instinct to rest between "hunts" remains.
2. Size and Breed
Larger dogs tend to sleep more than smaller breeds. Mastiffs, Saint Bernards, and Newfoundlands can sleep 16-18 hours a day, while smaller, more active breeds like Jack Russell Terriers may sleep closer to 12 hours.
3. Age
- Puppies: 18-20 hours — growing requires massive energy
- Adults: 12-14 hours
- Seniors: 16-18 hours — aging bodies need more rest
4. Activity Level
A dog that gets regular exercise and mental stimulation will sleep more deeply and soundly. A bored dog may sleep more but less restfully.
Dog Sleep Stages
Dogs go through the same sleep stages as humans:
Stage 1: Drowsiness
Your dog is relaxed but still aware of their surroundings. Eyes may be half-closed.
Stage 2: Light Sleep
Dogs enter REM sleep quickly — you might see twitching paws, whisker movements, or soft barks. They're dreaming!
Stage 3: Deep Sleep
This is when dogs are hardest to wake. They may stretch out, lie on their back, or curl into a tight ball.
Common Dog Sleeping Positions
| Position | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Curled up in a ball | Conserving warmth, feeling protective |
| On their back, belly up | Feeling safe and comfortable — the ultimate trust position |
| Side sleeping | Deep, restful sleep — common in comfortable, secure environments |
| Curling against you | Bonding and seeking warmth |
| "Superman" pose (stretched out) | Relaxed and ready to play — common in puppies |
When to Be Concerned
While lots of sleep is normal, contact your vet if your dog:
- Suddenly starts sleeping much more than usual
- Has trouble settling or seems restless during sleep
- Shows signs of sleep apnea (gasping, snoring loudly)
- Is lethargic even when awake
