Your pet is slowing down. They sleep more, move less, and maybe their eyes are getting cloudy. Here is what you need to know about caring for a senior pet.
When Is a Pet Considered Senior?
- Small dogs (under 20 lbs): 9-11 years
- Medium dogs (21-50 lbs): 7-9 years
- Large dogs (over 50 lbs): 5-7 years
- Cats: 11-14 years
1. More Frequent Vet Visits
Senior pets should see the vet twice a year instead of once. Early detection of kidney disease, diabetes, and cancer dramatically improves outcomes.
2. Diet Changes
Senior formulas have fewer calories (less active pets), more fiber (digestive health), and added joint support supplements like glucosamine.
3. Exercise Modifications
Shorter, more frequent walks instead of one long session. Swimming is excellent for arthritic dogs as it provides exercise without joint impact.
4. Joint Health
Orthopedic beds, ramps instead of stairs, and non-slip floor mats help senior pets with mobility issues.
5. Dental Care
Dental disease is extremely common in senior pets and can affect heart and kidney health. Regular dental checkups are essential.
6. Vision and Hearing Changes
Cloudy eyes and reduced hearing are normal. Do not startle a senior pet from behind. Use touch and scent cues instead of voice commands if hearing declines.
7. Cognitive Changes
Pets can develop dementia-like symptoms: pacing, confusion, changes in sleep patterns, or forgetting house training. Ask your vet about supplements that may help.
8. Weight Management
Senior pets are prone to weight gain, which puts extra stress on joints and organs. Monitor portions carefully.
9. Comfort
Warmth, soft bedding, and a quiet space become more important as pets age. They may seek out warm spots more frequently.
10. Quality of Life
The most important question: is your pet still enjoying life? Pain management, comfort care, and sometimes the hardest decision of all, are part of responsible senior pet care.
Your senior pet has given you years of love and companionship. The least we can do is make their golden years as comfortable as possible.
