Adopting a rescue pet is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. But going in unprepared can lead to a difficult transition for both you and the animal. Here are 15 critical questions to ask before adoption.
About the Pet
- How old is this animal?
- What is their medical history and vaccination status?
- Have they been spayed or neutered?
- Are they microchipped?
- Have they had any known behavioral issues?
- Are they good with other dogs or cats?
- Are they good with children? What ages?
About Their Background
- Where did this animal come from?
- How long have they been at the shelter?
- What do you know about their previous home?
About Ongoing Needs
- Do they have any known health conditions requiring medication?
- What are they currently eating?
- What is their exercise routine like?
- Are they house-trained?
- Do they have any separation anxiety?
The Shelter Should Also Provide
Medical records, a health certificate, and a trial period if possible. A reputable shelter or rescue organization will answer all these questions willingly.
Before You Go Home
Pet-proof your house: secure toxic plants, hide electrical cords, remove small objects that could be swallowed, and set up a quiet safe space where the new pet can decompress for the first few days.
The first 3 days will be overwhelming. The first 3 weeks will be adjustment. The first 3 months is when the real bond begins to form. Be patient with your rescue. They have been through more than you know.
