How to Introduce a New Cat to Your Home: The First 30 Days

Bringing a new cat home is exciting but can be overwhelming for both you and the cat. The first 30 days set the foundation for their entire life with you.

Day 1-3: The Safe Room

Set up a small, quiet room (bathroom or spare bedroom) with food, water, litter box, and a hiding spot. Place the cat in this room and leave them alone. Do not force interaction. Let them explore the room at their own pace.

Day 4-7: Gentle Introduction

Sit in the room with the cat for 10-15 minutes at a time. Read a book, talk softly, or just be present. Offer treats but do not force contact. Let the cat approach you.

Day 8-14: Expanding Territory

Open the door and let the cat explore the rest of the house at their own pace. Keep the safe room as their retreat. Do not chase or pick them up.

Day 15-21: Routine Building

Establish consistent feeding times, play sessions, and litter box locations. Cats thrive on routine. The more predictable their environment, the more confident they become.

Day 22-30: Full Integration

By now, most cats will be exploring freely, using the litter box consistently, and showing their personality. Some cats may still be shy, which is normal. Continue to be patient.

If You Have Other Pets

Keep the new cat separated from existing pets for at least 2 weeks. Swap bedding between them so they get used to each others scent. Then introduce through a baby gate before allowing direct contact.

Red Flags

  • Not eating or drinking after 24 hours
  • Not using the litter box after 48 hours
  • Excessive hiding that does not improve after 2 weeks
  • Aggression toward existing pets that escalates

If any of these occur, consult your veterinarian. The first month is about patience, not perfection.
