Pet Emergency Preparedness: What to Do When Disaster Strikes

Earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, and floods do not wait for you to prepare. Having a pet emergency plan can save your pets life. Here is what every pet owner needs.

Emergency Kit for Pets

  • 3-7 day supply of food and water
  • Medications and medical records in a waterproof container
  • Leash, harness, and carrier
  • Recent photos of your pet (for identification if separated)
  • Litter and litter box for cats
  • First aid supplies
  • Comfort items (favorite toy or blanket)

Evacuation Plan

  • Identify pet-friendly shelters and hotels along your evacuation route
  • Never leave your pets behind during an evacuation. If it is not safe for you, it is not safe for them
  • Practice loading your pet into the carrier and car so it is not stressful during an actual emergency
  • Have a backup person who can evacuate your pet if you are not home

Identification

  • Microchip your pet and keep registration information current
  • Attach ID tags with your current phone number
  • Keep a recent photo of your pet on your phone

After the Disaster

  • Keep your pet confined and supervised. Displaced animals may be disoriented and more likely to run
  • Watch for stress-related behavior changes
  • Check your home for hazards before letting your pet roam freely
  • Maintain regular feeding and care routines as much as possible

Practice Makes Perfect

Review your emergency plan every 6 months. Replace expired food and medications. Update photos and contact information. Practice evacuation drills with your pet.

Being prepared is not paranoid. It is responsible. Your pet depends on you for their safety, and planning ahead is the best way to honor that responsibility.
