Litter box problems are the number one reason cats are surrendered to shelters. Most issues are solvable with the right approach.
Problem: Cat Goes Outside the Box
Causes: Dirty box, wrong litter type, box location (too noisy or busy), medical issues, or stress from another pet.
Solutions: Scoop daily, try different litter types, move to a quiet location, rule out medical issues with a vet visit.
Problem: Cat Refuses to Use the Box
Causes: Covered boxes trap odors, the box is too small, or the cat had a painful experience in the box (UTI).
Solutions: Switch to an open, larger box. The rule: one box per cat plus one extra. A 3-cat household needs 4 boxes.
Problem: Cat Scratches Walls Instead of Litter
Causes: Not enough litter depth or the wrong litter texture.
Solutions: Provide 2-3 inches of litter. Try a different brand or texture (clumping vs. non-clumping).
Problem: Spraying (Urine Marking)
Causes: Territorial behavior, stress, or medical issues. Spraying is different from inappropriate elimination. Spraying happens on vertical surfaces.
Solutions: Neuter/spay if not already done, reduce stressors, use Feliway diffusers, and clean sprayed areas with enzymatic cleaners.
Problem: Cat Tracks Litter Everywhere
Solutions: Place a litter mat outside the box, try larger-pellet litter, or use a top-entry box that forces the cat to step out onto a ledge.
When to See the Vet
Any sudden change in litter box habits warrants a veterinary check. Urinary tract issues, kidney disease, and diabetes all manifest as litter box problems first.
A clean, well-maintained litter box in the right location solves most problems. Your cat is not being difficult. They are communicating.
